Ahead of the Trend: A Peek Inside Indy’s Temaki House
Five years ago, Alan had a dream to bring his favorite dish of temaki to his friends in the United States. Alan was visiting from his home in Brazil while working at a summer camp on Virginia Beach. One day he suggested to his friends that they go out to eat for temaki.
“You have to try this!” he exclaimed to his friends who were also working at the camp.
His American friends had no idea what he was talking about and a restaurant that served his beloved temaki was no where to be found. It was then that Alan had the idea to bring temaki to the States at a time when only a handful of temaki restaurants existed and only in cities like New York and Los Angeles.
Hold on…What is Temaki?
Temaki is basically sushi wrapped in a rolled cone of seaweed, wrapped around rice and fillings. It’s sometimes called a “hand roll” and is traditionally a Japanese dish. Temaki became popular in Brazil due to the influence of an influx of Japanese immigrants to Brazil in the early 1900s. Brazilian temaki is a fusion of Japanese methods with Brazilian ingredients and flavors like Brazilian cream cheese and fresh, tropical fruit.
After summer camp ended Alan went back to Brazil to finish his studies at the university and to work on his business idea. He found a job selling juice to help raise funds, spent some time researching in Florida, quickly realized he wasn't going to make enough money selling juice, and assembled a team of partners and investors to help make his dream a reality.
Temaki House opened early in 2017. Alan wanted to quit school to work at his newly opened restaurant but his parents advised he finish school since he only had one more semester to complete. Finally, graduation day arrived. The next day Alan hopped on a plane from Brazil to a very, very cold Indianapolis winter with only three hoodies and the realization of a dream.
"I was very excited…I really wanted to be here in the States,” explained Alan. It all happened so fast.
Alan was still in school, living in Brazil while he and his team brought Temaki House into existence. Upon arriving to Indianapolis and stepping into the restaurant for the first time was better than he had imagined. It was like walking into a dream or an idea.
"I was feeling so many things! I’d dreamed of it for fours years…and one day it was finally here!"
